NOVEMBER 1 - Crossed by Ally Condie.

In search of a future that may not exist and faced with the decision of who to share it with, Cassia journeys to the Outer Provinces in pursuit of Ky - taken by the Society to his certain death - only to find that he has escaped, leaving a series of clues in his wake.

Cassia’s quest leads her to question much of what she holds dear, even as she finds glimmers of a different life across the border. But as Cassia nears resolve and certainty about her future with Ky, an invitation for rebellion, an unexpected betrayal, and a surprise visit from Xander - who may hold the key to the uprising and, still, to Cassia’s heart - change the game once again. Nothing is as expected on the edge of Society, where crosses and double crosses make the path more twisted than ever.

The Matched Trilogy is definitely on my list of favorites and I am anxious to see the second installment. Of the dystopian books I’ve read, Condie creates a very specific and structured society that greatly contrasts with things we take for granted.

I am two steps into making a friendship this semester! Hah!

My journalism 3 class let out early again today so I went to my Politics of Poverty classroom half an hour early to get more reading done for my Music of Latin America and the Caribbean class done.

I entered the building through a different entrance and was a bit disoriented but was pretty sure I was closer to my classroom than last time when I got to run around the building because I entered near room 217 and needed to be at 275.

When I got to class there was only one person in the room but I recognized him from last class and told him that, if he wasn’t there, I would’ve been second guessing my memory.

We talked until class started—nothing special or anything, but it was just nice to have casual conversation with a stranger you’d be seeing at least twice a week for a full semester.

We spoke a lot about ourselves (and asked the other questions) and when class started, that was that.

But, as I just found on my Facebook, he friend requested me, which I think is cool because: 1. my Facebook is a bit difficult to find if you don’t know my nickname is Jesi (and I always introduce myself as Jess) and 2. Class ended at 11:30 and the request was already there before 3 p.m.

So far in my other classes I haven’t made any progress in getting to make casual in-class friendships, but this just made me a little more optimistic. :)

I know it’s silly. I sound like I just started at a new school or something but, I think, it’s harder to open up to strangers when you’re older since a lot of people don’t see the need to. So even if I’m happy about a completely mediocre event, at least it’s something that made my day a little bit better.

  • Making friends in the classes is going to be a lot harder than I expected
  • Getting all A’s will definitely be difficult
  • I am going to go all out for class participation
  • I won’t let myself fall behind in work (except for reading this 245 page novel due tomorrow that was posted on Saturday. Screw that.)
  • I’m going to make sure I have gum or something to chew if I start falling asleep
  • I’m going to stay organized

and how good it feels to have accomplished something.
